Mill Valley

Ordinance: 

Mill Valley residents hosting guests through Airbnb, VRBO and the like are being asked to register their short-term rental units with the city.

 

The City Council last week determined the first step to regulating how these rentals operate is to collect data on how many there are and where they are in the city. Packets including registration forms, a good neighbor policy and an introduction letter will be sent to some 400 business license holders with living accommodations to invite them to register any short-term rental units they may have.

 

Registration comes with a $50 annual fee.

 

The rental space must be legally permitted and be in the single-family residential zoning district to qualify.

 

Registration requires the applicant to provide an address for the unit, a maximum number of occupants at a single time, number of parking spaces, an emergency contact and the type of rental space — such as an entire house, single room, second unit and so on.

 

 

In addition to the registration there is a $16 business license fee, both annual charges, which will hold owners responsible for remitting a 10 percent transient occupancy tax for each rental transaction.
